Policy on Associate Status

The ICUU is a worldwide group devoted to strengthening the Unitarian Universalist faith around the globe, while still affirming the variety and richness of belief and practice exhibited by our various member groups.  Our purposes (listed below) include facilitating mutual support among member groups and promoting our liberal religious ideals and principles around the world.


Requirements for Associate Organization Status
While the ICUU welcomes the interest and participation of any group or representative of any group generally in line with those purposes, associate status is reserved for those organizations not qualified for full or emerging group member status that:

  • Formally identifies itself as a Unitarian or Unitarian Universalist group.
  • Represents philosophies and is engaged in activities that are consistent with the values of the ICUU.
  • Identifies a mission oriented towards the promotion of international cooperation.
  • Has a constitution and membership structure and operates with democratic process.
  • Contributes an annual subscription fee to be set by the Executive Committee

Privileges of Associate Status
Associate Organizations may:

  • Have an organizational representation and access to display space at all open meetings of the Council.
  • Attend all open plenary sessions of the Council.
  • Having given the appropriate notice (14 days prior to the planned meeting) place an item on the agenda in the general business section for discussion within given timeframes.
  • Have a right to speak at plenaries on behalf of their organization after all accredited delegates have had the chance to speak.  Associate organizations will NOT have a vote at plenaries.
  • Host workshops promoting their group and its concerns at Council meetings, space and time permitting.
  • Have a link on the ICUU website.

Preamble to the Constitution of the ICUU
We, the member groups of the International Council of Unitarians and Universalists, affirming our belief in religious community based on:

  • liberty of conscience and individual thought in matters of faith,
  • the inherent worth and dignity of every person.
  • justice and compassion in human relations,
  • Responsible stewardship of earth's living system,
  • and our commitment to democratic principles,

declare our purposes to be:

  • to serve the Infinite Spirit of Life and the human community, by strengthening the worldwide Unitarian and Universalist faith,
  • to affirm the variety and richness of our living traditions,
  • to facilitate mutual support among member organizations,
  • to promote our ideals and principles around the world,
  • to provide models of liberal religious response,
  • to the human condition which upholds our common values.
