Unitarianism began in Transylvania within the liberal wing of the Protestant Reformation in the second half of the 16th century, at the Diet of Torda (1568), when King John Sigismund declared liberty of conscience and religion for the first time, inspired by the preaching of Francis David.
At the end of the 16th century there were 400 congregations.
400 years of persecutions has reduced that number.Most Unitarians live in villages. The headquarters is in Cluj (Koloszvar), the capital of Transylvania.
All Transylvanian Unitarians are ethnic Hungarians.
